CPAP Machine Maintenance Tips: Keeping Your Device in Top Condition

A CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine is a would-be necessity for people with sleep apnea; it saves their sleep and their health. Nonetheless, to have the guarantee that it can still operate efficiently and offer the best treatment your CPAP machine requires some upkeep.

 1. Daily Cleaning

Cleaning is one of the most basic and yet one of the best forms of maintenance that need to be employed. Every morning after waking with the CPAP machine on, remove the mask and the tubing then wash it with warm water. Either use mild soap or a certain solution designed for the cleaning of CPAP gear to wipe out any oils or residue. Let the component dry for some time so that the entire structure can be reassembled again. This dross habit helps to reduce the formation of biofilm and mould, both of which are unfavourable to your therapy and could make you develop an infection.

 2. Weekly Deep Cleaning

Apart from the general cleaning done every day, there is the need to clean the house once in a week. Weekly, some of the components of the CPAP machine that needs to be dismantled include the mask, the tubing and the water chamber. Rinse these components with warm water mixed with soap and gently scrub the surface parts of these components with soft brush or cloth and a special attention should be paid to the elimination of any additional stains. It is important to wash off all the soapy residues properly in case of washing them. In regards to the water chamber, it could be important to use a vinegar solution in trying to get rid of any deposit. The last step is separating all parts and leaving them to dry for sometime before attempting to assemble them again.

 3. Replace Filters Regularly

Most CPAP machines come with filters that should be changed regularly to guarantee that the air is free of dirt. There are typically two types of filters: one time use and sustainable. Disposable filters should be changed every 1-2 months whereas the reusable ones should be washed every 1-2 weeks. There may perhaps be industry-specific advice on using things, so be sure to refer to the guidelines set for the manufacturer. It is recommended that filters should be washed at least once per week to avoid a serious decrement in the functioning of your CPAP equipment and to prevent it from overheating.

 4. Inspect and Replace Parts

Check on your CPAP machine occasionally for signs of wear, and physical damage. One should ensure the mask, tubing, and water chamber are not cracked or have tears. Faulty components may have worn out and thus cause leakage of air and hence the efficiency of the machine will be reduced. If at any time throughout the therapy process, a part has become damaged, it must be replaced immediately so your therapy continues to be efficient. Majority of the manufacturers always offer replacement parts and accessories, therefore their state should always be checked.

 5. Maintain the Machine’s Exterior

The outer part of the CPAP machine should also be cleaned often so as to get rid of dust and other materials that may accumulate on the surface. Clean the outside of the machine with a damp cloth ensuring it is not wet. Do not apply abrasive surfaces on the skin as this may cause further irritation to the skin or even damage the surface. Also, the environment surrounding the CPAP should be cleaned and ensure that it does not accumulate dust as it may accumulate on the body of the CPAP machine.

 6. Proper Storage

In its idle state, ensure that the CPAP machine is kept in a clean and a dry place preferably out of the reach of children. This is not good for the device so avoid putting it in the rays of the sun or sources of heat such as lighters and fire. If you’re travelling with the machine, then it is advisable to put the machine in a carrying case to avoid physical impact.

 7. Follow Manufacturer’s Instructions

It should be noted that maintenance of each of the CPAP machines could be different according to its make and model.

 8. Schedule Regular Check-Ups

Last of all, one should see a doctor or a supplier of a CPAP machine or equipment and have a check-up once in a while. They can do the professional maintenance, the troubleshooting if there is some problem with the machine, and they should give you tips on how to maintain the CPAP machine properly. One can go for routine professional check-ups because this will enable the doctor to find and treat any complications before they become big.

The above CPAP machine maintenance tips will helps you in maintaining your device for effective therapy leading to improved health. When taken care of the machine lasts longer and also ensures that the quality of sleep and health of the user is improved.
