How to Draw a Beard – let’s Get Initiated!

Step 1

For this first step in our guide on how to draw a beard, you’ll outline with a pencil that you’ll use as a guide for later steps. In our reference image, all lines drawn with a pencil will be displayed in lighter gray, while lines drawn with a pen will be drawn in black. First, you can outline the pencil, which will mainly comprise the outline of the drawing’s head and ears.

You can then draw the outlines of the hair on top of this pencil guide, and then you can also draw the details of the eyebrows and nose, as shown in our reference image. Some curved lines will also work for details on the cheekbones next to the nose. Then you can also add some bars for the closed eye of the front. Once you’ve drawn these details, you’re ready for the next step!

Step 2

Now that you have the facial pencil outline drawn and the first few facial details are drawn, you can continue adding it for the next part of your beard drawing. To start this step, you can draw a few more details, so the ears show through. as our reference image. You can add a rounded mustache below the nose and draw the mouth below the mustache. You can also draw the other closed eye as it occurs in our contact image.

Step 3

You have the top half of the face drawn, and you can start drawing the beard in the next few steps. To do this, you’ll recap the beard as it arises in the respective image. You can use some hard curved lines on the side for the jaw, and you can extend each line down from the ears. Then there will be another curved line at the base of the chin of your beard drawing. Now that you have the schematic, you’ll add more details in the next few steps.

Step 4

You can start adding some details to the inner part of the beard at this part of the beard drawing. This step may seem complicated, but if you take it easy and follow the guide, you can do it! You can add some curved lines on the mustache and throughout the beard. The beard lines will be longer than the mustache lines.

Step 5

In this step of our how to draw a beard guide, you’ll add the final details and erase the pencil lines from the first step. First, you can add better-curved lines to the hair; some choices extend from the hair’s base to the top. Some will only extend to the middle of the hair, and although you can follow the lines exactly, you can also change them a bit for your drawing!

Once you have these final details, you can start erasing the pencil lines from the first step. When you start to erase, you’ll want to ensure the ink in pen is dry before erasing. If you erase it too soon, you can smear the ink on the pen! Before you continue to the final step, you can even add some of your points. I could draw the neck and shoulders of the man in the picture as an idea, but how do you think you will finish this drawing before the final step?

Step 6

The sixth and final step of your beard drawing will allow you to add some colors to your image. Our contact image used a dark brown for the male’s beard and hair. However, this is just one idea out of many you could use! For an extra fun detail, you can use your hair color for a personal touch. You could even use more stylistic colors to color it, like blues, greens, and reds.

There are no wrong answers, and you really should get creative! Once you know what colors to use for your image, you can also have fun deciding what artistic media to use to finish it off. A bit of watercolor paint would be great to give your image a softer look, but if you want a more vibrant look, you can use some acrylic paints and colored pens.
