5 Tips for Taking Care of Sensitive Skin

Having a sensitive skin is a real challenge. There are so many products that may not suit your skin and cause issues like redness, irritation or breakouts. You may find it hard to look for the best products that suit your skin and give you actual results. Sometimes, it even feels like everything you apply on your skin ends up making it even worse.

Here are some amazing tips that can help keep your sensitive skin calm and healthy.

1. Choose Gentle, Fragrance-Free Products

The first step is to replace your skincare products that have harsh chemicals and fragrances. Many skincare products that you see on the shelf or social media sites have ingredients that can cause irritation especially on sensitive skin.

Make sure to read the label properly before investing in skincare products. Choose products with natural ingredients like chamomile and green tea. Also, look for special labels that say fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. These products will prevent skin irritation and redness.

Choose moisturizers, cleansers and soaps that are formulated for sensitive skin and are free of alcohol that can cause excessive drying.

2. Patch Test New Products

You may have heard about skin patch tests. Well, it’s particularly important for people with sensitive skin to do a patch test before starting to use a new product on the face. To do so, apply a small amount of the product to your wrist to check for any possible reactions like irritation and redness.

Then wait for around twenty four hours to see if any irritation develops. If your skin remains calm then it is considered safe to use.

Applying a new product directly on your face is a huge risk, so it is always safe to do a patch test beforehand to identify what works best for you.

3. Use Mild, Non-Irritating Acne Treatments

Dealing with acne on top of your sensitive skin can be a real challenge. Most of the acne treatments products out there contain strong ingredients to combat the issue. These ingredients can cause redness and peeling especially on sensitive skin.

Make sure to explore acne treatment products with gentle ingredients. For example, you can look for products that contain salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide in low concentrations. The best option is to look for natural ingredients like tea tree oil to combat acne.

4. Avoid Hot Water and Long Showers

While a hot shower can be relaxing, it’s not the best choice for sensitive skin. The reason is because hot water can strip away natural oils from your skin, which can lead to dryness and irritation. Just like you have seen on many beauty tutorials and commercials, always wash your face and body with lukewarm water

It’s best to keep your shower routine short to minimize excess exposure to water and steam. When drying your skin, gently pat dry without rubbing it. Finish your shower routine with a gentle moisturizer to avoid drying the skin.

5. Use Organic Shampoo and Hair Products

Your hair care products also affect your skin, especially if they contain harsh chemicals. When you wash your hair with a shampoo, it runs down your face and body. If it contains harsh chemicals, it can cause irritation and redness to your skin.

To avoid irritation caused by hair products, choose organic shampoo and other products that are made of natural ingredients. They are free from harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens and artificial fragrances.
