5 Items you Should Toss Before Moving

Business

Moving homes or apartments can be extremely stressful, especially if you have to spend time packing up all of your belongings. You’ll want to keep things you use on a regular basis, but there are definitely some things you should toss before moving that may take up space but serve no other purpose but to collect dust in storage.

Here’s our list of 5 items you should throw out or donate before you move. It will help you save money on moving and make your life easier.

Decorations that are Out of Style

You should consider tossing worn-out curtains or other decorating pieces before you pack for moving. If the color has faded, if it’s not in style anymore, if the fabric is worn or damaged, or if it just doesn’t match the rest of your home, get rid of it.

They’re taking up space and will probably never be useful again. Also, consider leaving behind or selling outdated furniture that no longer matches your taste. Maybe you’ve redecorated since you first bought it, or maybe it just doesn’t suit your needs anymore.

Expired Food and Medications

Expired food can not only be a problem for your health, but it can also cause problems during moving. If you are planning to buy a storage unit, it is best to get rid of expired items to save yourself some space.

The same applies to expired medications and cosmetics, such as lipstick and mascara. Check with your pharmacist about the validity of your prescription to determine if it’s time to replace it. If you’re not sure whether an expired medication is safe, ask your pharmacist for guidance.

Old Electronics

If you’re tossing out old electronics, they may contain lead and mercury. These toxic substances can contaminate soil if they are disposed of improperly. If the devices are in working condition, donate them or sell them to an electronic recycling company.

If they’re not working, there is a risk that the chemicals will leach into the soil so it’s best to dispose of them by placing them in a sealed bag or container and taking them to a hazardous waste disposal site for proper disposal.

Broken Items

It’s not just the furniture that needs a good cleaning when you’re getting ready to move. If there are broken items in your house, it’s best to get rid of them, or at least put them away where they can’t be seen.

You never know when something might roll off a shelf and break, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Many moving companies also advise leaving broken items behind to save yourself some struggle.

Extra Bedding and Towels

Extra bedding and towels can be the best place for allergens, mold, mildew, dust mites, bacteria, and other allergens. They’re not just in your bedroom but also in bathrooms, living rooms, and kitchens.

It’s best to use only what you’ll need for your new home so that everything is fresh and clean when it gets there.
